Coffee is one of the great pleasures in my life, and thankfully, I can usually drink a sugar-free or close-to-it concoction that doesn’t wreck my blood sugars. (Even though some people have issues with coffee/caffeine raising their blood sugars, regardless of other ingredients.)
I have assessed (by trial and error) how my local coffee shop makes my coffee drinks, and after hundreds of cups of coffee, know the ones I need to take insulin for, and the ones I don’t. So, when some new barista comes in and makes my Grande Iced Skinny one-and-a-half pump Mocha (which SHOULD be using the sugar-free chocolate syrup), and I receive a drink where the label doesn’t quite true-up…..do I believe that it is the same drink I am used to accounting for sugar-wise, or not?Over the years, I have lost the taste for sugary sodas, sweet tea and the like, even though pre-diabetes, sweet tea was probably my favorite drink. Now, it’s too syrupy and sickly sweet to stomach. I really don’t drink sodas at all anymore (carbonation is my enemy, for so many different reasons), but on the off-hand chance I get one, I can realize pretty quickly if I ask for diet and accidentally get the full-blown-sugar-filled version instead. But today, with this coffee drink….I wasn’t 100% sure. So far, I am hanging steady with sugar numbers in the 80s without taking any extra insulin, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this drink really is what I think it is. Either way, it’s tasty and I’m finally awake, so, yay!!
Recently various petitions have been circulating the Diabetes Online Community, so today let’s pretend to write our own. Tell us who you would write the petition to – a person, an organization, even an object (animate or inanimate) – get creative!! What are you trying to change and what have you experienced that makes you want this change?
We, the undersigned affected by varying degrees of discombobulated pancreases, do hereby petition the restaurant and food industry to aid us in our “guesstimations” and give us clear nutrition information about the foods and drinks we consume outside of our regular comfort zone. Really, just a few items for each morsel of potential blood-sugar havoc would suffice….number of carbohydrates, protein, fat, and fiber content would go a LONG way towards helping us to ascertain the magic “I need this much insulin to cover this much food” number.
Imagine a world where, after eating a delicious meal of P.F. Chang’s Spicy Chicken, a person’s blood sugar might have a prayer of staying under 300 if they knew exactly the correct number of carbs to bolus for. (Sorry, high school English teacher Mrs. Farlow – I still can’t help ending a sentence in a preposition.) Granted, even knowing those numbers can still evoke a spiral of fatigue-inducing sugar highs, but as we all know, knowing is half the battle!!
Why can’t everything we consume have this info?
So far today, my blood sugar range has fluctuated between 45 and 205 (according to my handy, dandy Dexcom)…which means I’ve felt either spacey-weak or fatigued-sleepy, and for more than a few minutes either way. Lows and highs tend to wreck how I feel, and don’t make me the best company to keep. But I have spent some wonderfully fun time today with my Mom, my husband, my daughter, two of my best friends, and the sons of one of them, and we’ll be having dinner tonight with my mother-in-law. It is the people in my life that make me say, “screw you, crappy blood sugars!” and pick myself up out of whatever funk the crazy sugars are causing, and have a good time anyway.
It is obvious that the high and low sugars are not the best part of my day – they certainly affect my day and how I feel, but it’s all the activities between those wonky sugars that really are the meat of my life. I appreciate things so much more than I have in the past….mainly because I know that time is fleeting, and having a chronic disease could cut short the time I have on this Earth. But I really hope it doesn’t, and I’m doing my best to fight it everyday. I have been blessed with a beautiful daughter (who I will call Penelope or Penny within my blog – I don’t wish to splash her name all over the internet without her permission, and she really won’t have the presence of mind to give it for quite some time), and no matter how I felt about my health and my diabetes before she came along, I have such a desire now to make sure I am here for a long, long time to be with her and see her grow and flourish.
Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers out there, all the women who wish to be mothers, all the mothers of non-human beings (I’m talking dogs, cats, etc, not aliens, but I guess we could wish alien mothers a happy day, too), and especially to my Mom and all the mothers I know personally in my life. You all ROCK!
